Stroke treatment and rehabilitation in India for Nepali patients

Acute stroke is not a medical-travel decision — it is a race to the nearest capable hospital, and that hospital is in Nepal. Where cross-border care genuinely helps is afterwards: structured rehabilitation, finding the cause, and preventing the next one.

  • In an emergency, go to the nearest hospital now
  • Rehabilitation is where travel helps
  • Finding the cause prevents the next stroke

The Nepal picture

Stroke is among Nepal's five leading causes of death

WHO's comparable 2021 estimates put it at roughly 13,600 deaths, around 6.9% of all estimated deaths.

The same risk cluster drives heart disease

Ischaemic heart disease sits at roughly 21,100 deaths in the same estimates. Hypertension and diabetes control is the shared intervention.

Rehabilitation capacity is the gap patients feel

Acute care has improved across the region faster than structured, intensive, multi-disciplinary rehabilitation has. That is what most families are actually looking for when they enquire.

What a rehabilitation programme involves

General description. A rehabilitation physician sets the programme after assessment.

  1. 01
    Assessment

Neurologist and rehabilitation physician review, with functional scoring so progress can be measured rather than guessed at.

  2. 02
    Cause workup

Carotid imaging, cardiac assessment including rhythm monitoring, and blood work — because an unidentified cause is an untreated risk of recurrence.

  3. 03
    Physiotherapy and occupational therapy

Daily, intensive, and measured. Intensity is the variable that distinguishes a programme from an appointment.

  4. 04
    Speech and swallowing therapy

Where speech or swallowing is affected, and often the area families most underestimate.

  5. 05
    Secondary prevention

Blood pressure, diabetes, lipids, anticoagulation where indicated — all continued in Nepal with a local physician.

What moves the cost

  • Whether the programme is inpatient or daycare
  • Programme length in weeks — this is the dominant variable
  • Number of therapy sessions per day
  • Whether speech therapy and swallowing management are included
  • Investigations needed to establish the cause
  • Any device, orthosis or mobility aid supplied

We publish no prices on this page. Any figure quoted before a specialist has read your reports is a guess, and a guess is a bad thing to plan a family’s finances around. What we do instead is obtain the hospital’s own written estimate, in its own format, with its assumptions stated — before you decide whether to travel. See how CureYatra handles costs.

What to send us before anything else

Do not attach medical records to the form below. Send a short enquiry first and we will reply with secure sharing instructions and a written consent step.

  • CT or MRI brain images from the time of the stroke
  • Discharge summary from the admission in Nepal
  • Current medicines, especially blood pressure, diabetes and blood-thinning drugs
  • Carotid Doppler and echocardiogram, if done
  • A plain description of current function: walking, speech, swallowing, hand use

Case-coordination fee · Nepal

NPR 5,000 per patient, per year — coordination only.

Inclusive of applicable taxes. The first enquiry is free; the fee is requested only when you decide to proceed, together with the reports and record-sharing consent. Every hospital, doctor, medicine, implant, diagnostic and travel charge is separate and paid by you directly to the provider. Terms & Conditions apply.

Questions Nepali families ask

My relative had a stroke this morning. Should we fly to India?

No. Go immediately to the nearest hospital capable of treating acute stroke. Time is the only thing that matters in the first hours, and travel costs you the thing you cannot buy back. Contact us afterwards, for rehabilitation and for finding the cause.

How long does rehabilitation take?

Programmes are commonly planned in blocks of weeks, with reassessment at the end of each. Ask for the goals to be written down at the start so you can judge whether continuing is worthwhile.

Can rehabilitation continue in Nepal?

It should. The realistic model is an intensive block in India followed by a maintained home programme, with a physiotherapist in Nepal working to a written plan.

Is recovery guaranteed?

No, and any facilitator who implies otherwise is not being straight with you. Recovery depends on the stroke, its size and location, the time since onset and the patient's other conditions.

What will it cost?

The hospital states its programme cost in writing after assessment. Because programme length dominates, ask for the cost per week and what the reassessment points are.

Nepal patient desk · direct enquiry

Send your case from Nepal — the first enquiry is free.

Tell us the diagnosis area and how to reach you. A coordinator replies on WhatsApp or email, explains how to share reports securely, and only then are suitable hospitals asked for a written clinical plan and their own estimate.

  • The first enquiry costs nothing. The NPR 5,000 annual case-coordination fee is requested only if you decide to proceed.
  • No Indian visa for Nepali citizens entering from Nepal, subject to the official identity-document and route conditions.
  • Nepali-language coordination, and consultations in English or Hindi.
  • You pay the hospital directly against its own written invoice — never CureYatra.
  • No hospital, price, timing or treatment outcome is guaranteed here; the hospital’s written documents always prevail.
