How to get treatment in India from Nepal

Most families do this in the wrong order — flight first, hospital second, reports last. Reversed, it costs less and goes better. Here is the sequence that works, and the documents each step needs.

  • Reports first, flights last
  • No Indian visa for Nepali citizens*
  • You pay the hospital directly

General information for planning, not medical advice. Diagnosis and treatment decisions rest with the treating doctors and hospitals.

The sequence that works

1 · Send the reports before anything else

A hospital cannot give you a clinical plan or a real estimate without them. Everything else — city, dates, budget, accommodation — follows from what the specialist says.

2 · Get the written plan and estimate

From the hospital, in the hospital's own format. Compare more than one if you have time. Never plan against a number given verbally.

3 · Confirm documents and route

Identity documents for the patient and every companion, checked against current requirements for your specific route — the rules for flying differ from the rules for the land border.

4 · Then book travel and accommodation

Once the hospital has confirmed acceptance and a date. Booking before this is the single most common way families lose money.

Entry, travel and money

  1. 01
No Indian visa for Nepali citizens

A Nepali citizen travelling from Nepal generally does not need an Indian visa, subject to the identity-document and route conditions set by the Government of India. We confirm the current document requirement for the patient and every companion before anything is booked, because airline rules for air travel are narrower than the land-border rules.

  2. 02
Reach a hospital in a day, not a season

Kathmandu is a short flight from Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai; eastern Nepal also routes through Bagdogra, and the Bhairahawa and Kakarbhitta crossings serve families travelling by road.

  3. 03
Money moves in one direction only

Hospital charges are paid by the family directly to the hospital against its own written estimate and invoice. Nothing medical is billed through CureYatra, so nobody is guessing what a bill contains.

  4. 04
    Currency and payment

Hospitals accept payment in Indian rupees through their own channels. Ask the hospital directly for its payment instructions in writing and never transfer money to any individual's personal account, including anyone claiming to represent a hospital or a facilitator.

  5. 05
Companions who are not Nepali citizens

A spouse, relative or attendant of another nationality may need a visa even when the patient does not. This catches families out at the airport. Tell us every companion's nationality at the start.

What CureYatra does, and what it does not

  • We organise your records into the form a hospital can review
  • We ask suitable hospitals for a written clinical plan and their own estimate
  • We check entry-document requirements for the patient and every companion
  • We coordinate appointments, arrival, transfers, accommodation and Nepali-language support
  • We stay on the case through treatment and help arrange follow-up after you return
  • We do not diagnose, advise on treatment, or promise an outcome — those belong to the treating doctors
  • We do not take your medical payment; every hospital bill is paid by you, directly to the hospital

We publish no prices on this page. Any figure quoted before a specialist has read your reports is a guess, and a guess is a bad thing to plan a family’s finances around. What we do instead is obtain the hospital’s own written estimate, in its own format, with its assumptions stated — before you decide whether to travel. See how CureYatra handles costs.

The document checklist

Do not attach medical records to the form below. Send a short enquiry first and we will reply with secure sharing instructions and a written consent step.

  • All medical reports: biopsy or histopathology, imaging reports and the images themselves, blood work, discharge summaries
  • A written summary of treatment already given, with dates
  • Citizenship certificate or passport for the patient
  • Identity documents for every companion, and their nationality
  • For children: birth certificate and both parents' documents
  • For transplant cases: family relationship documents, started on day one

Case-coordination fee · Nepal

NPR 5,000 per patient, per year — coordination only.

Inclusive of applicable taxes. The first enquiry is free; the fee is requested only when you decide to proceed, together with the reports and record-sharing consent. Every hospital, doctor, medicine, implant, diagnostic and travel charge is separate and paid by you directly to the provider. Terms & Conditions apply.

Questions Nepali families ask

Do Nepali citizens need a visa for medical treatment in India?

Generally no, for a Nepali citizen travelling from Nepal, subject to the identity-document and route conditions set by the Government of India. The document accepted for air travel is narrower than for the land border, so we confirm the current requirement for your specific route rather than asserting a list here.

What if a companion is not a Nepali citizen?

Then that companion may well need a visa. This is one of the most common problems families hit, and it is entirely avoidable if you tell us every traveller's nationality when you first write.

Which Indian city should we go to?

It depends on the diagnosis, not on the city. Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata all have major centres, and cost of living during a long stay differs between them. Let the clinical requirement choose first, then compare.

How much money should we carry?

Plan against the hospital's written estimate plus a margin for living costs and the possibility of a longer stay. Never plan against the bare procedure figure — accommodation and an extended stay are what strand families.

What does CureYatra charge?

NPR 5,000 per patient per year, inclusive of applicable taxes, for coordination only. The first enquiry is free, and the fee is requested only if you decide to proceed.

Nepal patient desk · direct enquiry

Send your case from Nepal — the first enquiry is free.

Tell us the diagnosis area and how to reach you. A coordinator replies on WhatsApp or email, explains how to share reports securely, and only then are suitable hospitals asked for a written clinical plan and their own estimate.

  • The first enquiry costs nothing. The NPR 5,000 annual case-coordination fee is requested only if you decide to proceed.
  • No Indian visa for Nepali citizens entering from Nepal, subject to the official identity-document and route conditions.
  • Nepali-language coordination, and consultations in English or Hindi.
  • You pay the hospital directly against its own written invoice — never CureYatra.
  • No hospital, price, timing or treatment outcome is guaranteed here; the hospital’s written documents always prevail.
