Paediatric and congenital heart surgery in India for Nepali children

For a congenital heart defect the echocardiogram, read by a paediatric cardiologist, decides almost everything — whether repair is single-stage or staged, how urgent it is, and what it will involve. Send it first and ask for the opinion in writing.

  • Echo images decide the plan
  • Say the child's age and weight in the first message
  • Both parents' documents need planning too

Why families travel for a child's heart surgery

Paediatric cardiac surgery is a scarce sub-speciality everywhere

It requires a dedicated paediatric cardiac surgeon, paediatric intensivists, a paediatric perfusion team and a paediatric ICU — a combination that exists in a limited number of centres in any country.

Timing is often the whole issue

Some defects must be repaired within a window, and waiting has permanent consequences. That is why parents press for a specialist opinion quickly rather than waiting for a domestic slot.

The child is the patient, but the family is the case

Two parents usually travel, one stays through a long ICU period, and someone must be at home. This is planned properly or it goes badly.

What the pathway involves

General description. The paediatric cardiologist and surgeon decide everything.

  1. 01
    Echocardiogram review

Ideally the images, reviewed by a paediatric cardiologist. Many defects are fully characterised at this step.

  2. 02
    Further imaging

CT angiography or cardiac catheterisation in complex anatomy, where the echo cannot answer the surgical question.

  3. 03
    Surgery or catheter intervention

Some defects — certain ASDs and PDAs — are closed by catheter. Others need open surgery, single-stage or in planned stages.

  4. 04
    Paediatric ICU

The period that dominates both the family's experience and the bill. Ask how many days the estimate assumes.

  5. 05
    Follow-up

Scheduled echo review, often arrangeable with a paediatric cardiologist in Nepal between visits.

What moves the cost

  • The specific defect and whether repair is single-stage or staged
  • The child's age and weight — small infants need more intensive support
  • Catheter intervention versus open surgery
  • Assumed paediatric ICU and ventilation days
  • Pulmonary hypertension or other associated conditions
  • Whether a second procedure is planned in the same admission

We publish no prices on this page. Any figure quoted before a specialist has read your reports is a guess, and a guess is a bad thing to plan a family’s finances around. What we do instead is obtain the hospital’s own written estimate, in its own format, with its assumptions stated — before you decide whether to travel. See how CureYatra handles costs.

What to send us before anything else

Do not attach medical records to the form below. Send a short enquiry first and we will reply with secure sharing instructions and a written consent step.

  • Echocardiogram report and, if at all possible, the echo images or video
  • The child's exact age, weight and current symptoms
  • Any CT angiography or catheterisation report
  • Birth history and details of any earlier procedure
  • Current medicines and recent blood reports

Case-coordination fee · Nepal

NPR 5,000 per patient, per year — coordination only.

Inclusive of applicable taxes. The first enquiry is free; the fee is requested only when you decide to proceed, together with the reports and record-sharing consent. Every hospital, doctor, medicine, implant, diagnostic and travel charge is separate and paid by you directly to the provider. Terms & Conditions apply.

Questions Nepali families ask

How quickly does my child need surgery?

That is exactly what the paediatric cardiologist answers from the echo, and it is the reason to send reports now rather than after arranging money. Urgency is a clinical judgement, not a facilitator's.

Can both parents travel with the child?

Yes, and it is usually necessary. Each companion's identity documents need checking, especially if any companion is not a Nepali citizen — the rules differ. We check before booking.

How long will we be in India?

Ask the unit for an expected ICU stay, ward stay and post-discharge review period, in writing. Congenital cases vary widely and a general answer would mislead you.

Will my child need another operation later?

For some defects, yes — staged repair is planned from the outset. Ask the surgeon to explain the full plan, not just the next operation, so you can plan financially for all of it.

What will it cost?

The hospital issues a written estimate after the echo review. Ask specifically how many paediatric ICU days are assumed, because that is the item most likely to move.

Nepal patient desk · direct enquiry

Send your case from Nepal — the first enquiry is free.

Tell us the diagnosis area and how to reach you. A coordinator replies on WhatsApp or email, explains how to share reports securely, and only then are suitable hospitals asked for a written clinical plan and their own estimate.

  • The first enquiry costs nothing. The NPR 5,000 annual case-coordination fee is requested only if you decide to proceed.
  • No Indian visa for Nepali citizens entering from Nepal, subject to the official identity-document and route conditions.
  • Nepali-language coordination, and consultations in English or Hindi.
  • You pay the hospital directly against its own written invoice — never CureYatra.
  • No hospital, price, timing or treatment outcome is guaranteed here; the hospital’s written documents always prevail.
