Kidney failure and dialysis care in India for Nepali patients

Dialysis itself is not usually a reason to travel — it is available in Nepal and it is not something to run across a border for. What families come for is the question underneath it: is transplant possible, is the current regime right, and is anything reversible being missed.

  • Dialysis is available at home — the question is what comes next
  • Transplant assessment is the usual reason to travel
  • Arrange holiday dialysis in advance, never on arrival

The Nepal picture

Dialysis demand grows faster than transplant capacity

The result is long years on dialysis. For a patient with a willing family donor, the transplant conversation is worth having early rather than after several years.

Diabetes and hypertension drive most of it

The same risk cluster behind Nepal's leading cardiovascular causes of death also drives chronic kidney disease.

Deceased-donor programmes are still developing regionally

Nepal reported its first combined kidney-and-liver retrieval from a brain-dead donor in 2025. Practical transplant planning for cross-border patients remains living-donor.

What a nephrology review involves

General description. The nephrologist decides your plan.

  1. 01
    Cause review

Establishing why the kidneys failed, because a small number of causes change management and a few are partly reversible.

  2. 02
    Dialysis adequacy

Whether the current regime is delivering enough dialysis, and whether access — fistula or catheter — is working properly.

  3. 03
    Transplant candidacy

Whether the patient is a candidate, and whether any family member could be a donor. This is the main reason families travel.

  4. 04
    Complication management

Anaemia, bone disease, blood pressure and fluid control, all of which affect how a patient feels day to day.

  5. 05
    Dialysis while travelling

If you are in India for any reason, sessions must be booked in advance with reports sent ahead. It cannot be arranged reliably on arrival.

What moves the cost

  • Whether the visit is a consultation, a full transplant workup, or ongoing dialysis
  • Number of dialysis sessions required during the stay
  • Investigations needed to establish the cause
  • Any access procedure — fistula creation or revision
  • Treatment of anaemia and bone disease during the stay

We publish no prices on this page. Any figure quoted before a specialist has read your reports is a guess, and a guess is a bad thing to plan a family’s finances around. What we do instead is obtain the hospital’s own written estimate, in its own format, with its assumptions stated — before you decide whether to travel. See how CureYatra handles costs.

What to send us before anything else

Do not attach medical records to the form below. Send a short enquiry first and we will reply with secure sharing instructions and a written consent step.

  • Nephrologist's summary and the cause of kidney disease if known
  • Creatinine and eGFR trend over time, not just the latest value
  • Current dialysis schedule, duration and access type
  • Ultrasound of the kidneys, and any biopsy report
  • Hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV screening — dialysis units require these before booking a session

Case-coordination fee · Nepal

NPR 5,000 per patient, per year — coordination only.

Inclusive of applicable taxes. The first enquiry is free; the fee is requested only when you decide to proceed, together with the reports and record-sharing consent. Every hospital, doctor, medicine, implant, diagnostic and travel charge is separate and paid by you directly to the provider. Terms & Conditions apply.

Questions Nepali families ask

Can I get dialysis in India while visiting?

Usually yes, but it must be booked ahead. Units require recent viral screening reports and details of your regime before they will confirm a slot. Do not travel expecting to arrange sessions after arrival.

Is transplant better than dialysis?

For suitable candidates, transplant generally offers better long-term outcomes and quality of life — but suitability, donor availability and the legal process all have to line up. A nephrologist assesses this; we only organise the review.

Who can donate a kidney?

Indian law permits living donation from near relatives, with an authorisation committee process for foreign nationals. Payment for organs is a criminal offence. Start collecting relationship documents at the same time as the medical reports.

Should I travel just for dialysis?

No. Dialysis is available in Nepal and travelling for routine sessions makes little sense. Travel for the assessment, the transplant, or a genuine second opinion.

What will it cost?

The hospital states it in writing after review. Costs differ sharply between a consultation visit and a full transplant workup, so tell us which you are asking about.

Nepal patient desk · direct enquiry

Send your case from Nepal — the first enquiry is free.

Tell us the diagnosis area and how to reach you. A coordinator replies on WhatsApp or email, explains how to share reports securely, and only then are suitable hospitals asked for a written clinical plan and their own estimate.

  • The first enquiry costs nothing. The NPR 5,000 annual case-coordination fee is requested only if you decide to proceed.
  • No Indian visa for Nepali citizens entering from Nepal, subject to the official identity-document and route conditions.
  • Nepali-language coordination, and consultations in English or Hindi.
  • You pay the hospital directly against its own written invoice — never CureYatra.
  • No hospital, price, timing or treatment outcome is guaranteed here; the hospital’s written documents always prevail.
